Incredibly peaceful, an absolute paradise for nature lovers and sooooo green. The lake is simply an incredibly green, calm, peaceful and, above all, quiet place. Like you hardly dare to speak loudly or disturb the atmosphere in any way, because you simply don’t want to disturb nature or the animals. It’s almost as if a special magic hangs over the whole place.

However, as it usually is the case with such places, Lago de Yojoa is one of those spots that isn’t quite that easy to reach – or at least not without a plan. Simply because there are hardly any villages or towns around the lake where you can just turn up or stay overnight. Like there are options – of course -, but they’re not really suitable for low-budget backpackers without a car. This naturally makes the lake itself a lot more peaceful, the natural surroundings much more beautiful and especially less touched by tourism. At the same time, however, it does make a visit more difficult.

As typical for me, I didn’t really let that intervene my plans of going to Lago de Yojoa. So I did a bit of research. That’s how I came across a village on Lago de Yojoa from which you actually have “direct access” to the lake. And by direct access I mean I made my way through an unofficial entrance into the countryside around the lake and then fought my way through the terrain until I reached the water’s edge. So not exactly ideal. It was certainly very beautiful, and this lake really exudes an incredible sense of calmth and an indescribable peace. Today I’d approach things differently though. Because at Lago de Yojoa it’d be worth it paying a bit more for accommodation so you can properly enjoy the lake and the surrounding nature. My trip was certainly very lovely and very green (do have a look at the video below for an impression), but I could have gotten more out of my trip to Lago de Yojoa.

Go or not? The lake itself is truly beautiful, but I admit I’ve seen more spectacular and more easily accessible lakes. So, I’d definitely include it on a round trip through Honduras, but on a journey through the whole of Central America, I’d see it more as an option 😊
