Mazunte

Mazunte is a type of small and sleepy, but also touristy little village. I frankly don’t really know how to describe Mazunte. Just, that it is very small and yet for my personal taste pretty touristy. The beach and Punta Cometa though are really nice. There’s not much more to see or do though. It’s a nice daytrip from Puerto Escondido. I was there mainly for Punta Cometa, cause beachwise Mazunte can’t compare to Puerto Escondido. 😀

Mazunte is a small place, some would probably say village, which is not far from Puerto Escondido and is basically a day trip. At least most tourists visit Mazunte in form of a day trip from Puerto Escondido.
It’s a pretty cute little place, which actually consists mainly of a beach and a beautiful viewpoint that rises up between two beaches.
You can get there by colectivo, which then drops you off at a certain point, from where you can continue your journey by a car carrying the people in the covered backpart. Here’s an advise from my side: take as little as possible with you, because the car was really overcrowded, at least on the day I went. Meaning: I was hanging onto it outside – no joke. Like I basically just stood on a kind of step at the back of the car and held on to an iron bar that was integrated into the car. Dont’t get me wrong I loved it because I love these kinds of adventures, but… I think it helped that I didn’t have too much with me 😀 (They would still get your stuff in somehow, but you don’t really need much on a day trip)
Well, the car then drove along a winding and slightly bumpy road to Mazunte and I just thought to myself ‘the life of a backpacker’ 😀

Once we arrived in Mazunte, it wasn’t far to the beach. You really can’t miss it. However…. I confess I was a little disappointed. Not because the beach wasn’t nice, but…. Puerto Escondido has really beautiful long beaches. It’s hard to keep up with them. And Mazunte… it’s not necessarily less beautiful, but max on a similar level. I personally don’t think Mazunte can compete with Playa Zicatela or Playa Bacocho, for example. So I was a bit disappointed. As I said, not because Mazunte isn’t really beautiful, but simply because I was expecting a wow effect that I simply didn’t have. But well, Puerto Escondido really spoils you. 😀

Go or not? Personally, I don’t think you have to go. If you love beaches, yes, but Puerto Escondido has more beautiful beaches in one place and simply get’s to you instantly. So… if you have time, yes, otherwise you’d better focus on Puerto Escondido.

Punta Cometa

Basic information

What: Viewpoint
Where: Mazunte (Punta Cometa)
Opening hours: 24/7
Fee: free
Website: no official website

The ‘Punta Cometa’ viewpoint in Mazunte is located between two beaches and looks out over the ocean. So you really get to see the ocean and the sunset is also really beautiful.
You can get there via a long path over sand and stones, for which it’s best to wear something more solid than flip-flops or open sandals. You can also do it in flip-flops, but then you have to be a bit more careful where you step. Oh, and try not to go at lunchtime, because the sun really burns down in Mazunte. Meaning the sand and the stones are super hot and you won’t be able to sit down anywhere and the sun will be beating down on you pretty much the whole time because there are no shady spots. Of course, the walk to the lookout point is still well worth it. I would just start to head there in the afternoon.

On the way you will have several great views, see really incredible rock formations and lots of holes in the rocks themselves. At the viewpoint, you have a really great view of Playa Cometa, the stones and rocks as well as Playa Mazunte. The sunset is like the icing on the cake. Not as beautiful as in Puerto Escondido, but also really nice. And by the way, you have enough time to come back after the sun has disappeared over the horizon to have enough light for the journey home.
Go or not? I think that if you do the day trip to Mazunte, you should definitely take the viewpoint with you. It’s honestly the coolest thing about Mazunte. 😀
