Market La Aurora

The market La Aurora in San Miguel de Allende is a place where art of all kinds is exhibited and sold. Here you can find designer furniture, valuable antiques, paintings and sculptures. Definitely higher-priced, but also very impressive in various cases.
I discovered the market while researching San Miguel de Allende. It’s not a classic tourist attraction in San Miguel de Allende, but I still had some time and wanted to see things that were a bit more local or just really cool.
What I particularly liked about this market was that it reminded me more of a huge studio where various artists exhibit their work, which is then sold for a price that corresponds to the value of the work. This is not so common in Mexico.
Personally, what I liked best were the paintings by a man who was actually sitting in his studio and had very expressive paintings standing and hanging everywhere.
Go or not? I found the market La Aurora very interesting because it was simply something completely different to what you usually find as a tourist in Mexico. Nevertheless, I would definitely visit the market last – unless you are interested in art and/or want to get a painting or other work of art for your home – because the market is defined solely by its artistic value.

Parks of San Miguel de Allende

There are several parks in and near San Miguel de Allende. Two of them are located right next to each other just outside the centre and can be characterised by their tranquillity and very relaxed atmosphere.
In the park ‘Benito Juárez’ there is a small pavilion, a basketball court and a few benches where you can chill out.
In park ‘El Chorro’, you walk up a kind of stone-paved path to a building from where you have a nice view of the park through the trees and the path leading up to the building.
Neither park is spectacular, but both are very sweet, peaceful and a good place to calm down a bit.
Go or not? If you have a bit of time left and have already seen the rest of San Miguel de Allende, go. Otherwise I would prioritise other things 😊

Toy Museum San Miguel de Allende

Incredibly cute, super interesting and my personal highlight in San Miguel de Allende!
You know when you literally expect nothing and then get really blown away? I rarely have that and the chances of this happening to me with a museum are about 1 in a million. But this museum is so incredibly cute and really just cool that it has managed to make an extremely positive impression on me.
I admit that I perhaps reacted a little more strongly to the museum than other people would because I simply am a child inside. Like my soul has retained the child. And this museum is simply full of incredibly cool and unusual toys. I mean I saw super cute miniature things that just made me melt.
In case someone now thinks ‘Come on it’s just toys.’ – Well yes and no. Not one of the toys I saw exists in Europe. There were a few things that were similar in sense of type or appearance – railways, miniature furniture (for dolls’ houses, for example) and dolls. At the same time, however, I have never seen around 90 per cent of the toys of the entire museum before. Not in any way. It was simply a cultural diversity from an entire different world. It was really just too cute. And the museum itself is not big, but neither are the things themselves. Meaning you really have a lot to see in a comparatively small space.
And please just let the pictures inspire you. But know that it’s only a fraction of what I saw and what’s there.
Go or not? As it was my absolute highlight, yes, definitely. If you only have one day, I would rather enjoy San Miguel de Allende. If you have an extra day, I would definitely put it on my agenda. And if you’re not into that sort of thing: Fools 😀 😉

Viewpoint of San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende has several viewpoints. This one is located slightly outside the centre, quite randomly on the road, but offers a really nice view of the cathedral of San Miguel de Allende and the city. As you can gain altitude quite quickly in San Miguel de Allende due to the kind of steep streets, you climb up a few steeper streets to get to the viewpoint and then it lies at the side of the road behind a – for me – chest-high wall in front of you. It’s not huge, but it’s very beautiful and really cute. It’s also on the way to a few other cool sights in San Miguel de Allende 😊
Go or not? Yes, I think you should go. Even if you’re only there for one day it’s a great opportunity to take a stroll through the streets outside the centre of San Miguel de Allende. And you can also take some nice pics 😊

Streets of San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is a chilled and relaxed little town in the north of Mexico. The centre of San Miguel de Allende is still quite lively and crowded both during the day and at night. However, if you move away from the centre a little, you quickly get to know the real San Miguel de Allende. The difference isn’t that big, but the stroll is really nice 😊 It’s very quiet and peaceful and the atmosphere is generally very relaxed.
What I personally particularly liked about San Miguel de Allende was that, despite being a small town, there are also very beautiful spots outside the centre that are super easy to discover during a walk around. Apart from that, San Miguel de Allende has these narrow, winding streets that often lead up and down a bit, which gives the town an incredible charm. 😊
Go or not? San Miguel de Allende itself is definitely worth a visit. And while you’re there, I would also take a quick stroll through the streets and get to know San Miguel de Allende 😊

Cathedral and Park of San Miguel de Allende

The centre of San Miguel de Allende is pretty, cute, peaceful and lively. Meaning it’s quite crowded and lively, but still perfectly okay and really cute. At the heart of the centre are the cathedral and the park. The special thing about the cathedral is that it is – at least in my memory – salmon pink and also reminds me a bit of a small version of the cathedral in Cologne. At least a little bit. What I’m trying to say is… it stands out from other Mexican churches 😊 PS: The cathedral is illuminated in the evening! A real eye-catcher! 😀
The park is just really relaxed. You’re offered treats, snacks and knick-knacks everywhere, people chill out on the benches, enjoy the sunshine and there’s a really cute pavilion in the middle of the park. It’s just really cute and beautiful. 😊
Go or not?  Yes. Period. Like if you’re in San Miguel de Allende, it will and should be the first thing you head for. The centre is really beautiful and totally cute. It reflects the vibe of the small town and invites everyone to feel at home.

Pena de Bernal

The Pena de Bernal is a kind of rocky mountain that can be reached and climbed within a day trip from Querétaro. The climb is easy to moderately and the view is really beautiful. So it’s well worth it 😊
I travelled there by bus from Querétaro. First you briefly walk through Bernal, which is about the size of a village. The path to the Pena then basically goes up a road that leads into a concrete path. Here there are many stalls selling snacks and souvenirs. The path up the Pena de Bernal is mostly stony or bumpy, but still quite easy to walk. There are places where the stone is strangely hollowed out, then there are parts with steps and parts with an almost slightly earthy surface. Halfway up, I met a super nice Mexican man with his son, whose wife and mum-in-law were waiting a little further down because the climb was a bit too much for their now older and less mobile mum-in-law. As the two of them were really nice, we climbed the rest of the way up together and I got a few photos of myself with a view 😀
As the little one was just as keen to experiment as I was, we climbed a little higher than the rest. Up there, there were some thin metal steps that were cut into the mountain and you could theoretically climb up. But we didn’t do that 😀
On the way back, I was kindly offered a lift back to the bus station in Querétaro. As I wanted to travel on to San Miguel de Allende that day I gratefully accepted the offer. And well, as we made a stopover in Colón, I ended up seeing that small village with the cute cathedral on top. 😊
Plus I had the pleasure of getting a lift in the back of a pick-up. And I don’t know if you’ve ever done this before, but it’s soooo much fun! 😀 The wind blows in your face, the landscape passes you by and it jolts and rocks a little and is honestly a thousand times more fun than just sticking your head out of the window. A really great day! 😊
Go or not? Definitely yes. I thought the Pena de Bernal and the view were really worth it. It’s also easy to do within a day trip and as there are lockers at the bus stop to lock your luggage away. So you won’t lose any time or even a day if you move on straight afterwards. 😊

Park Avenida Universidad

Avenida Universidad is a bit like a park that lies on the edge of Querétaro’s centre, separating the “outskirt” from the more central Querétaro. A double road runs along here. And, in between, basically lies a park with a river in the centre. The impressive thing is that when you walk through the park, you don’t realise that you actually have roads to the right and left of you, because the park is very quiet and relaxed and invites you to stroll around. You also see lots of joggers or people walking their dogs.
Plus at the very beginning, or at least where I started, there is a large fountain and towards the end there is simply a gentle fade out.
Go or not? The Avenida Universidad isn’t really anything fancy, but I personally was pleasantly surprised by it. So it’s not a must-go, but a sweet on top if you have time.

Viewpoint Cuatro Palos

Cuatro Palos is a viewpoint of the Sierra Gorda near Querétaro. You can get there either by car and then on foot or by bus, which will drop you off at the entrance to the hiking trail. However, as there are not necessarily many parking options at the entrance to the hiking trail, I would recommend taking the bus.
The hiking trail itself is actually really beautiful. At the beginning, you walk a little more in the shade and under or between trees and at midwalk plus later you pass a lot of smaller individual huts made of stone or clay. And, of course, this part is also less shady and with more sunshine and really beautiful views of the landscape.
At some point, you walk past signs for campsites and just know that it’s not far from there anymore.
As soon as you reach the sign for ‘Cuatro Palos’, a narrow and relatively steep path leads past uninhabited huts and grass to the top, where you then walk in like a kind of arc way towards the viewpoint. In the way you can already mostly see the view. Yet when you arrive to the viewpoint, the view is better 😊
Once you arrive at the viewpoint, it lies before you in beautiful, bright sunshine and invites you to sit down, linger and enjoy the view. I also went exploring a bit back then and discovered swings on trees, which I personally thought were really cool. You also have to walk through a forest with trees growing at an angle as if the mountain was the straight ground. Very weird and a bit like an enchanted forest. Really cool. 😊
Go or not? I think the day trip to Sierra Gorda is totally worth it. You get out, hike through shade and sun, the hike itself is neither super strenuous nor a doddle – so it’s a nice workout – and the views aren’t bad either. All in all, a really cool day trip 😊

Viewpoint El Pipila

Beautiful and incredibly cute. I personally have many really nice memories of this place. As I love viewpoints – as mentioned in several other posts – I knew from day 1 that I absolutely had to go up to this viewpoint.
Interestingly, the path up to it leads through winding alleyways and I’ll be honest – I followed other people the first time. It’s not like super easy to find the viewpoint if you don’t find the right entrance or take a wrong turn along the way (although there aren’t too many turning options on the way up).
When I reached the top, it was clear within milliseconds that I had just arrived at my favourite place in Guanajuato. The view of Guanajuato from up there is seriously amazing. And to the left of/next to the viewpoint there is a café built up in steps, from where the view certainly as well is pretty good.
Apart from that, the platform itself is large, but not huge and there are steps leading down to the platform when you arrive, where you can chill later once you’ve enjoyed the view. Because…. There is always something going on up there. There are always people – at really any time of day or night – and there’s always a good atmosphere. Whether it’s people playing music or others who have a speaker with them, people who have previously worked in the nightlife or evenings in Guanajuato and now want to enjoy the flair, or people who run up to the Pipila after partying to watch the sunrise. Because yes, sunset, night, sunrise and of course during the day – the Pipila is a amazing at any time. Both in terms of the vibe and the view.
I once went up there myself with one of my best Mexican friends after partying for the sunrise and it was simply magical. A really special place in a special little student town.
Go or not? To be honest, the question is oblivious. Like you can chose to not got up, but that‘s on you then 😀

What about a gondola trip?

Yes, I know it’s not actually a gondola, but a cable car, but honestly. It doesn’t matter, it’s a real highlight. Especially when the weather is nice. The Cologne cable car is one of those things where I don’t understand at all why it’s not one of the main attractions. With that I mean well known and frequently visited by tourists etc. Because the ride over the Rhine is really great. And between us… You fly over the Claudius Therme. For all those who don’t know what that means: nude bathers. At least a few. Maybe not always what you would wish for as a view, but it still has something 😀 😉 But back to serious, the ride over the Rhine in the cable car is really worth it. I would even put it in my top 5 in Cologne.

Izamal

In Mexico, there are often cute little towns called Pueblos Mágicos. In other words, magical villages or small towns. These usually have charm and are a really cool thing that everyone who has a bit of time left over after seeing the main attractions wants to visit. One of these small towns is Izamal. It’s close to Valladolid and a day trip away. Ergo a short bus ride including one or two monuments on site and a few cute cafés and restaurants and a quiet and sweet charm over all.
When I arrived in Izamal it was already warm and so I just had a quick look around the streets of Izamal before heading to the local tourist magnet – don’t worry, most people do this and don’t miss much.
Izamal’s main attraction is the Convent of San Antonio. It is painted completely yellow on the outside and has an incredible number of archways. I suppose that’s also the reason why everyone wants to go there. It simply looks great and is very photogenic and instgrammable 😀 also great for selfies and perspective photos and everything. And it’s yellow! 😀 As you can see, I had fun too. The courtyard also looks very friendly and inviting thanks to the lawn. 😊 It’s not super cool, but very, very cute and totally charming. The second attraction in Izamal is a pyramid: Kinich Kakmó. It’s also not anything spectacular, but well worth a visit. And you can get a view of Izamal from the top 😉
Izamal yes or no? I wouldn’t say priority 1, but do go if you have the time. It’s just a cute little town and is really great for a relaxed day trip.
