Mazunte

Mazunte is a small place, some would probably say village, which is not far from Puerto Escondido and is basically a day trip. At least most tourists visit Mazunte in form of a day trip from Puerto Escondido. It's a pretty cute little place, which actually consists mainly of a beach and a beautiful viewpoint that rises up between two beaches. You can get there by colectivo, which then drops you off at a certain point, from where you can continue your journey by a car carrying the people in the covered backpart. Here's an advise from my side: take as little as possible with you, because the car was really overcrowded, at least on the day I went. Meaning: I was hanging onto it outside - no joke. Like I basically just stood on a kind of step at the back of the car and held on to an iron bar that was integrated into the car. Dont't get me wrong I loved it because I love these kinds of adventures, but... I think it helped that I didn't have too much with me :D (They would still get your stuff in somehow, but you don't really need much on a day trip) Well, the car then drove along a winding and slightly bumpy road to Mazunte and I just thought to myself ‘the life of a backpacker’ :D Once we arrived in Mazunte, it wasn't far to the beach. You really can't miss it. However.... I confess I was a little disappointed. Not because the beach wasn't nice, but.... Puerto Escondido has really beautiful long beaches. It's hard to keep up with them. And Mazunte... it's not necessarily less beautiful, but max on a similar level. I personally don't think Mazunte can compete with Playa Zicatela or Playa Bacocho, for example. So I was a bit disappointed. As I said, not because Mazunte isn't really beautiful, but simply because I was expecting a wow effect that I simply didn't have. But well, Puerto Escondido really spoils you. :D Go or not? Personally, I don't think you have to go. If you love beaches, yes, but Puerto Escondido has more beautiful beaches in one place and simply get's to you instantly. So... if you have time, yes, otherwise you'd better focus on Puerto Escondido.

Punta Playa Colorado in Puerto Escondido

The view of the sunset from Playa Colorado is really beautiful! But as I actually ended up at Playa Punta Colorado purely by chance, I'll tell you the story from the beginning. I had just returned from an excursion and wanted to make myself a snack in the kitchen when a large group set off to somewhere. When I asked where they were going, they just said ‘To watch the sunset. Do you want to come along?’ As my hunger was still satisfiable with snacks at the time and I love sunsets, I thought ‘Why not?’ and joined the group without further ado. At the bottom, we first went to the kiosk because everyone seemed to have a bit of an appetite for snacks, and off we went. The journey was extremely interesting because about 15 people were squeezed into a single jeep. By that I mean a car that has a loading area at the back where you can stand on it. In plain language, this means that two slim people squeezed into the front passenger seat next to the driver and the rest of us packed ourselves like sardines into the back of the jeep. Well, sqeezed is not the truth, because there was enough space. At least stand ing :D - And yes, we were all able to hold on properly. So we first drove down the road a bit and then took a kind of forest track through the greenery to Punta Playa Colorado. The section was quite twisty, bumpy and - between us - it was honestly really a lot of fun. However, it wouldn't be for people without a heart for adventure. And would absolutely never work in Europe :D When we arrived at Punta Playa Colorado, we all got off the jeep and sat down in awe, because.... The view really isn't bad at all. The beach stretches out below you on the right and half right/half straight ahead the sun slowly sets in the form of a ball of fire. The picture is.... really beautiful. It really is. We also saw a whale far out in between, which made the whole thing even more special. To be honest, I was taking photos the whole time and watching the sunset in a completely mesmerised state, because the sunset in Puerto Escondido is simply an absolute eye-catcher. It casts a spell over you and never lets you go. Oh and FYI the return journey after the sun had set - meaning in the dark through the forest and only what the headlights of the car hit was visible..... - the adrenaline junkie in me was very happy :D Go or not? As we went there by jeep, I'm not sure if you can get there another way. Because it's safe up to the point where you turn off onto the path through the forest. But I honestly don't know how long you have to walk from there and whether I would dare to do it solo in the dark. So you'd have to do some research.

Punta Zicatela in Puerto Escondido

For a long time, I just called Punta ‘Rocas’, meaning stones. I first noticed it when I was watching the main surf spot for a while. On the far left corner, or rather on the corner, there are a few rocks with birds on them. From a distance you can't see exactly how high or what's there, but I saw people walking towards it and when I saw the big rock standing in the water thought to myself  ‘The view from up there must be really good’. So I first tried along the edge. But at some point the water rises so high that you don't know if you can get through. As I had seen on maps that there was also a path around the top, I took the ‘longer way’. And it was really worth it. Rocas, or Punta Zicatela, is... a kind of wild stone bay. You climb down first and are then surrounded by wild stone and rock formations. To the right, a few tree trunks have wedged themselves between the stones in an angled formation and are part of the ambience. A little further out is a bird cliff, which is populated by pelicans on top and is therefore completely white with bird shit on top. To the left you come across a kind of sandy beach with large stones in it further to the left and diagonally to the right is the before mentioned rock. I saw from a distance that there were people on it. Means: possible. I confess that the ascent was a little unorthodox because there was no clear route and, to be honest, I wasn't wearing the best footwear with flip-flops, but! I got there. And the view from the top was really damn good! I could see the whole Playa Zicatela, could look out to sea, watch the surfers, had a good view of the pelicans and... it was really worth giving it a go. On the way down, by the way, I used the trick ‘Where you came up, you can also come down.’ It's an old saying from my father and works brilliantly when your brain is thinking ‘How the hell am I supposed to get back down here?’ If you walk a little further to the left from all the stones and rock formations - the water has of course left its mark - you will see a rock on which a bunch of men are standing and regularly throwing lines into the water. What they are doing? Well, fishing! Because Mexicans don't need angles to fish 😉 However, I didn't dare go there. Firstly, the rock was quite far into the water and secondly, that had never ben my goal at all. So I took in the scenery for a while. The sea, which kept lapping at the rocks and stones and then retreating again incredibly quickly, the stones lying in the current and completely green with moss/algae and this place, which, despite its proximity to the beach, is actually quite secluded. Go or not? Personally, I really enjoyed the excursion! I would recommend it to anyone who is okay with a bit of climbing and adventuring. And no, from where you're standing before you start the descent down to the rock with the great view, you can't even begin to see the same thing. So it's all or nothing here 😊

Surfers Spot in Puerto Escondido

I like the surfer spot in Puerto Escondido because watching the surfers on their boards has a hypnotising effect. At the same time, it has by far the most fantastic view of the sunset in Puerto Escondido. Surfers at sunset... an increidble picture - like for real. In fact, the surfer spot is not really like a "spot" and you can surf elsewhere in Puerto Escondido, but! It's just the spot where most of the surfers bob around in a heap waiting for the next best wave. As I can't surf, I let myself be hypnotised by the view and enjoyed the sunsets and tried to capture the view with my camera. Should you go here? Like if you want to miss out on these sunsets, that's on you :D

Playa Angelito in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Angelito was one of the most beautiful bays in Puerto Escondido for me. There is a slightly curved strip of sandy beach, a few stalls at the edge and a few families sitting on the ground or on chairs under umbrellas. There are palm trees in the background and boats bobbing on the water. To the right and left, the bay is lined with rocks that are round and big enough to climb on, at least in large parts. For me, it was like the perfect, somewhat secluded paradise. Of course, I also went exploring, which meant I got to see the less beautiful and rather polluted part of Puerto Angelito. The view of the bay from there was still great (looking out to the sea on the right along the path of stones). I didn't actually spend much time at Puerto Angelito itself because I mainly took photos and looked around a bit. But this bay with the boats was just really beautiful and well worth the trip! Go or not? Well, I would say yes. The view of the bay from the side alone is absolutely worth it 😊

Playa Coral in Puerto Escondido

This small stretch of beach is located to the side and/or behind the beach where the turtle release takes place (Playa Bacocho). Playa Coral is honestly not very big, especially compared to Playa Bacocho, but it's like a perfect little bay. Not with palm trees and such in the background, but there's something about this beach that gets to you. I think the only/easiest way to get there is to drive to Playa Bacocho and then walk across the small stone cove (Posita Natural Julieta). Admittedly, it's not a path that you can walk along ‘just like that’, but I personally find the bay of Playa Coral really beautiful! And there aren't usually that many people here. Go or not? As there are two beautiful beaches and an incredibly charming stone cove right next to each other, I think you have to. Not to mention the fact that the sun is reflected in the water in a completely different way due to the shape of the bay. It's just really beautiful! 😊

Playa Bacocho in Puerto Escondido

Have you ever been to a turtle release? It's honestly one of the sweetest and most beautiful yet cruel things I've ever seen. The explanation soon above. First, a quick visit to the beach. Playa Bacocho is really long! I'm still of the opinion, that Playa Zicatela is longer, but Playa Bacocho definitely does compete in it's length :D When I was there for the first time, I just thought to myself ‘How can one place have two such beautiful beaches with perfect water and such a bright sun on the horizon?’ Because that's Playa Bacocho. You are greeted by pretty much a white sandy beach, a sea glistening under the sun, endless beachsight (as far as the eye can see for sure), a small palm tree backdrop on the far left, where there also is a hotel, and a small stone bay bordering the beach on the left. And hardly a soul sitting anywhere. A few people walking up or down the beach, a few in the water, someone walking his or her dog somewhere.... That's it. I don't think we have such beautiful beaches in Europe that on top are so unpopulated compared to their length and size. And so clean! Honestly. Just wow! And I'm not really a beach fan, but Puerto Escondido just had me. Back to the turtle release. A friend from the hostel had asked me if I wanted to come along. Personally, I hadn't planned to go to one because I thought to myself ‘Well, they release little turtles and then they run off into the sea... I don't think that's like super cool.’ Well, far fetched. Like yes it basically describes what happens, but... if you've ever taken part or been to something like this, you know what I'm talking about. First of all, how cute are these tiny little things? :D And how adorable is it when they try to climb out of the bowl? And then you're not allowed to touch them because otherwise they'll have a hard time out there in the big wide world and you always have to hold the bowl so that they can't escape... As I hadn't registered, I didn't have my own bowl and therefore only took photos. But it was great anyways. A kind of barrier is set up behind which people kneel down to release the turtles into the sand. They face relatively straight out to the ocean so that they can't miss it. A few of the locals stand in front and try to stop the birds from eating the little turtles. Because yes, that is literally their favourite food. And you don't know how fast these creatures can dart down to grab one of these cute little turtles. Like for real.... Well, you stand there, cheering the turtles to get to the ocean and swim, while the little ones sprint for their lives and you hope with every wave that they get swept away just so that they don't get eaten by a bird in the water. It's.... Extremely cute and beautiful, but also really brutal when you see how these birds simply see the turtle release as a kind of feeding time and can hardly be shooed away - and don't get me wrong, the Mexicans really try everything to keep the birds away. Yes or no? Playa Bacocho as well as turtle release: YES! Because.... It's a piece of Mexico. And you're doing something good by helping to guide one more turtle into the ocean (not too many of them - I don't know how many - turtles survive...). And Playa Bacocho is also really beautiful, so :D

Streets of Puerto Escondido

Okay, if I'm really precise, it's actually just the Avenida del Morro and some of the side streets near Playa Zicatela - there's always jewellery, bags and souvenirs for sale in the evenings. Like a few Mexicans sit outside with tables and basically sell stuff to tourists. It wasn't my favourite place to go shopping, but it's there. The Avenida del Morro was exactly where I needed to go to see what Puerto Escondido looks like away from the beautiful beaches. The area was quite differen and sometimes I even had to laugh a little - anyone who understands Spanish and/or knows Mexico will know which pictures I mean - but mostly it was interesting how big the discrepancy was. I mean, I doubt that anyone but somebody slightly crazy like me will ever get lost there because everyone is focused on the beaches, surfing, their holiday or chilling out or whatever. Nevertheless, I found the excursion extremely interesting. And of course I also went to the centre/town of Puerto Escondido, but... between you and me, it looked like any random Mexican town near a beach. Avenida del Morro, on the other hand, was somehow interesting. Because it was so authentic and without filters. Like the beach is the same, but I just found it interesting to see what a beach resort in Mexico looks like when you leave the beach. And that's exactly what I got. Go or not? No. You don't have to. Well, you're very welcome to, but if you're not like me and don't like taking photos of these kind of places, then you won't find it interesting. So take a look at the pictures and maybe you can guess which ones made me grin or laugh 😊

Playa Principal in Puerto Escondido

The main beach of Puerto Escondido is - I would say - by far the most populated beach in Puerto Escondido. At the same time, it actually combines Playa Marinero, Playa Principal and Bahia Puerto Escondido in one. Don't get me wrong, you can just walk along the sea in Puerto Escondido for a very long time and pass several beaches along the way. So... I'll just talk about this bay in one. If you come from the backpacker area (Playa Zicatela), as I did at the time, the first beach you pass is Playa Marinero. I assume this is the section with the stones. Very cool, because from here it is not very far to a small viewpoint (Mirador Romance de Verano), but at the same time you can take great pictures of Playa Principal and the whole bay from here, because you have a kind of overview meaning nice view. As you walk on, you'll run into lots of locals, pass vendors and stalls, see boats that are either being hauled in or pulled into the water or simply bobbing on the water and lots of Mexican families relaxing here. It is also one of the few beaches with a kind of skyline in the background. Others may find that stupid, but I thought it was a change 😊 Go or not? Personally, I think the beach is completely worth it. You see a different, somewhat more Mexican and therefore in some ways more authentic side of Puerto Escondido and what I particularly liked: you can see that the beaches in Puerto Escondido are relatively different, which in turn makes Puerto Escondido so special.

Viewpoint Romance de Verano

There are a few things I particularly like when travelling. These include viewpoints. I love viewpoints! I promise that if there is a viewpoint in a place I visit, I will go 99 per cent of the time. The one per cent is for when there are several and I then have to choose which ones are most worth it. To be honest, this viewpoint doesn't really look like a cool viewpoint from downstairs as it's not particularly high and located between two beaches. Plus it doesn't stand out. I almost walked past it too. But! As I happened to be in exploring mood plus the viewpoint was simply on my way along the beaches, I climbed up the steps. Guys, never judge a book by it's cover, they say, right? The view from up there is absolutely fantastic for the relatively low altitude. I was surprised myself. Sure, you don't have a perfect view, but you basically get a kind of overview of a part of Playa Zicatela. Like a kind of different perspective. And honestly? It's really cool! So I would advise the following: As you will definitely end up near Playa Principal, why don't you just climb up the steps to the viewpoint? At least if you're coming from Playa Zicatela - the hidden treasure lies between the two beaches.
