Oaxaca has several churches and cathedrals that are particularly architecturally impressive from the outside. The temple of Santo Domingo of Guzmán is, in my opinion, the most impressive of them all – funnily enough, despite being the largest.
You enter the church through an almost inconspicuous door and are immediately surrounded by elaborate decorations carved from wood and partly painted in gold. The normal-height and relatively narrow corridor leads into a somewhat wider and quite high room that is covered all over with gold decorations. Seriously, every millimetre here is covered in gold. The walls, the ceiling… everything! The altar is, of course, the highlight with its three towering gold columns adorned with figures.
The church is a real eye-catcher. Even if religion or churches are not your thing, this church is definitely impressive. It may be relatively small, but its chest swells with pride. A real experience to see it from the inside.
To go or not? One hundred per cent. I am an atheist and was deeply impressed.
