For a long time, I just called Punta ‘Rocas’, meaning stones. I first noticed it when I was watching the main surf spot for a while. On the far left corner, or rather on the corner, there are a few rocks with birds on them. From a distance you can’t see exactly how high or what’s there, but I saw people walking towards it and when I saw the big rock standing in the water thought to myself  ‘The view from up there must be really good’.

So I first tried along the edge. But at some point the water rises so high that you don’t know if you can get through. As I had seen on maps that there was also a path around the top, I took the ‘longer way’. And it was really worth it.

Rocas, or Punta Zicatela, is… a kind of wild stone bay. You climb down first and are then surrounded by wild stone and rock formations. To the right, a few tree trunks have wedged themselves between the stones in an angled formation and are part of the ambience. A little further out is a bird cliff, which is populated by pelicans on top and is therefore completely white with bird shit on top. To the left you come across a kind of sandy beach with large stones in it further to the left and diagonally to the right is the before mentioned rock. I saw from a distance that there were people on it. Means: possible.

I confess that the ascent was a little unorthodox because there was no clear route and, to be honest, I wasn’t wearing the best footwear with flip-flops, but! I got there. And the view from the top was really damn good! I could see the whole Playa Zicatela, could look out to sea, watch the surfers, had a good view of the pelicans and… it was really worth giving it a go.
On the way down, by the way, I used the trick ‘Where you came up, you can also come down.’ It’s an old saying from my father and works brilliantly when your brain is thinking ‘How the hell am I supposed to get back down here?’

If you walk a little further to the left from all the stones and rock formations – the water has of course left its mark – you will see a rock on which a bunch of men are standing and regularly throwing lines into the water. What they are doing? Well, fishing! Because Mexicans don’t need angles to fish 😉
However, I didn’t dare go there. Firstly, the rock was quite far into the water and secondly, that had never ben my goal at all. So I took in the scenery for a while. The sea, which kept lapping at the rocks and stones and then retreating again incredibly quickly, the stones lying in the current and completely green with moss/algae and this place, which, despite its proximity to the beach, is actually quite secluded.

Go or not? Personally, I really enjoyed the excursion! I would recommend it to anyone who is okay with a bit of climbing and adventuring. And no, from where you’re standing before you start the descent down to the rock with the great view, you can’t even begin to see the same thing. So it’s all or nothing here 😊
