The view of the sunset from Playa Colorado is really unbelievably beautiful! But as I actually ended up at Playa Punta Colorado purely by chance, I’ll tell you the story from the beginning.
I had just returned from an excursion and wanted to make myself a snack in the kitchen when a large group set off somewhere. When I asked where they were going, they just said ‘To watch the sunset gag. Do you want to come along?’. As my hunger could still be satisfied with snacks at the time and I love sunsets, I thought ‘Why not?’ and joined the group without further ado. At the bottom, we first went to the kiosk because everyone seemed to have a bit of an appetite for snacks, and off we went.
The journey was extremely interesting because about 15 people were squeezed into a single jeep. By that I mean a car that has a loading area at the back where you can stand on it. In plain language, this means that two slim people squeezed into the front passenger seat next to the driver and the rest of us packed ourselves like sardines into the back of the jeep. Well, squashed is not the truth, because there was enough space. At least to stand on 😀 – And yes, we were all able to hold on properly. So we first drove down the road a bit and then took a kind of forest track through the greenery to Playa Punta Colorado. The section was quite twisty, bumpy and – between you and me – it was honestly really funny and a lot of fun. However, it wouldn’t be for people without a heart for adventure. And would absolutely never work in Europe 😀

When we arrived at Playa Punta Colorado, we all got off the jeep and crouched down in awe, because…. The view really isn’t bad at all. The beach stretches out below you on the right and half right/half straight ahead the sun slowly sets in the form of a ball of fire. The picture is real…. Beautiful. It really is. We also saw a whale far out in between, which made the whole thing even more special. To be honest, I was taking photos the whole time and watching the sunset in a completely mesmerised state, because the sunset in Puerto Escondido is simply an absolute eye-catcher. It casts a spell over you and never lets you go.
Oh and FYI the return journey after the sun had set – meaning in the dark through the forest and only what the headlights of the car hit was visible….. – the adrenaline junkie in me was very happy 😀

To go or not? As we went there in a jeep, I’m not sure if you can get there that way. Because it’s safe up to the point where you turn off onto the path through the forest. But I honestly don’t know how long you have to walk from there and whether I would dare to do it solo in the dark. So you’d have to do some research.
