The Palacio de Correos is the main post office in Mexico City and a very magnificent building. And as I found out online and by chance, probably also a museum. My story with the building is… it frustrated me at the time and is funny now looking back.
I never googled, visited or did anything else with this building for touristic reasons. I lost my Visa bank card somewhere in Chiapas – yes, I definitely lost it, it wasn’t stolen. Of course I had it cancelled immediately and had a second one with me anyways. So it wasn’t too bad or anything. Nevertheless, I wanted to have a second card as security for such cases as for example this one- just like I hah had until now. So I needed a new one.
After my mum had researched how long a damn letter with a card inside – insured, of course – takes to get from Germany to Mexico, it was clear that the new card had to be sent somewhere that I could get to again and again if necessary. I mean, 4-6 weeks or possibly even 3 months is a good span of time 😀 So we decided that it would be Mexico City. Because it’s so centrally located in the country that I thought ‘I can always go there if the card doesn’t arrive in the time planned.’ Yeah. At the same time, there obviously was the possibility that the card would arrive earlier or even ‘on time’.
So I have been to this post office I think 5, 7 times or something? because my mum had explicitly sent it there. I don’t know how many times I went there before I had the idea to ask if I could check online to see if the parcel had arrived. You can – but it was the fourth time or so I’d been there.
And yes, the parcel with the card actually arrived at some point. However, it took more than three months and so I had…. Let’s just say I had time to do a few trips in between and also to warm up to this building and realise that it’s really beautiful.
And so, on top of the times I was there for the parcel, I was also there again to photograph the building. It’s a story I’ll never forget 😀 Absolutely never 😀
Go or not? As I actually discovered the Palacio de Correos quite involuntarily, I’m still grateful that I have, because the building is really beautiful and has a great staircase and a really beautiful lift. And also the area where you can pick up your post – believe me, my hallelujah was huge when the card was ACTUALLY there (I went there once for nothing because it said it was there online). The area is also really nice and still has old counters with people behind the glass and an incredible number of parcels piled up and waiting to be picked up. So take a look if you like. It’s a nice little mini-sight 😊
