Mammuth Grotte

Basic information

What: Mammoth caves near San Cristóbal
Where: Just outside San Cristóbal (we were there on a tour, but I strongly assume that there is also a bus going there. So not directly there, but in Mexico you can tell the bus driver where to drop you off. This means you take a bus, get dropped off and research in advance how to get there :D)
Opening hours: 07.00 – 19.30
Fee: as I was there with a tour and we paid for several places, I don’t know, but I can’t imagine it’s too expensive
Website: doesn’t really exist

The mammoth caves near San Cristóbal are both cooler and less cool than they sound.
The uncool thing: the caves aren’t really cool – to be honest.
But!!!!
The part that is labelled as a mammoth actually looks like a mammoth. And I’ve seen a lot of things in Mexico that are made up. So… Apart from that, the grotto or cave is really big. So when you enter, it’s quite a big cave, where you slowly go further in and walk along a kind of circular path that leads you to the illuminated mammoth, among other things. It is of course smaller than it probably would have been in reality, but the outer contours are more or less correct. So you can recognise it.
Apart from that, the cave isn’t super cool. But it is quite cool. My personal highlight at the time was when we were exploring the cave and found a mushroom growing all by itself in the dark. It was really small and I had to get really close with my camera. It may sound stupid, but finding an orange mushroom like that in the dark between stones in a cave…. You just don’t expect that 😀
To go or not to go? I would say optional. The trip is quite cool, but not a priority. So I’d go if you’re still up for it and have time. And I don’t know whether the mushroom is still there or not 😀
