Ekbalam

Basic information

What: Ekbalam ruins (day trip)
Where: Google Maps; a bus from the station in Valladolid will take you there. Just ask around. The locals will know.
Opening hours: 08.00 to 16.00 (daily)
Fee: the internet is full of arguments here, so ask at the hostel or from locals, but it shouldn’t be expensive. I estimate it is still around 170 pesos
Website: As there is no official website, just stick to me or other travel blogs and don’t book a tour – really not necessary.

Ekbalam! One of my favourites in the Yucatán! Honestly, I was very pleasantly surprised 😊 Quite a manageable area of ruins, very cute. Quite quiet (oh boy thats really bad in english) and…. You can get on top of the pyramid!!! 😀 But I´ll tell you everything from the beginning 😊
Shortly before Ekbalam I had been to Chichén-Itzá and if you read the blog post: I wasn’t that blown away. Too expensive, too touristy, too crowded, too everything. Ekbalam is legit the complete opposite. At least when I was there. It was absolutely reasonable in terms of price, hardly any tourists on site, a bit smaller (area, not!!! height), but totally cute and beautiful ruins and a pyramid on which you could climb up – a really steep staircase over some really high steps, but still cool! -from which then you have an awesome view! 100 points Ekbalam. And mega relaxed, quiet, no people trying to sell you anything and just chilled out and enjoyable. And even if it’s a hot day, there’s plenty of shade to take refuge under and greenery to keep the heat more or less away.
Yes or no? Definitely YES! You could skip Chichén-Itzá for all I care and just go to Ekbalam. Much nicer! 😊
