The Sótano de las Golondrinas is one of those special places that you don’t find everywhere.
To briefly explain: the Sótano de las Golondrinas is a kind of ‘cellar’ cave in which many swallows spend the night to then emerge from the cave at sunrise in a circling flock and fly towards the sun. I don’t think you can find this anywhere else in the world, or at least not so often, and I pretty frankly felt it to be pretty special.
Of course, you have to be there super early and walk down to the cave in pitch darkness with flashlights and as quietly as possible. It’s a bit of an adventure. But when you sit there in the dark, hear the swallows slowly waking up and wait with the others until the first sunlight comes over the treetops to wake the swallows and then these birds slowly circle past you towards the sun… It’s hoenstly special. The only slight disappointment for me was that I imagined the flock of birds to be thicker. Apart from that though the magic of the place and the experience had me completely hooked 😊

Go or not? Even if the journey there was a bit complicated in my case, because the thing is simply in the middle of nowhere and I didn’t drive to the small super tiny village nearby to spend the night, which is why I had to organise myself a bit more. Nevertheless it was worth the hassle. Simply because you don’t get to experience something like this every day.
